Doubling its originally estimated high at the Distillers One-on-One Auction last week, a rare bottle of 68-year-old Glen Grant single malt, called Visionary, sold for £212,500. This sale follows the record-breaking half-a-million-pound sale of Bowmore’s single malt at the same charity auction the week before.
At £212,500, this recent sale for the Glen Grant distillery marks a record-breaking price for the brand, placing it among the top three out of 39 at the auction. This comes after the sale of a bottle of Glen Grant Devotion 70-Year-Old for £81,250 the previous week.
Extracted from a single Oloroso sherry cask numbered 835, the 68-year-old Visionary was distilled in 1955. The fragrance of ripe fruit blends with buttery caramel notes on the nose, along with a delicate hint of smokiness.
On the palate, a fruity vanilla and sweet sherry flavor is noted with a rich and robust finish. The Visionary provides a long-lasting sensation on the palate with sweet nuts, spice, and smooth smoke.
The bottle design draws inspiration from the life of one of the founding brothers of the distillery, James “The Major” Grant. His love of travel, passion, and conservation can be seen in the design of the decanter, featuring an innovative, hand-blown 1.6L battuto-cut magnum and a Malachite gemstone stopper.
The proceeds from the One of One sale will go to the Distillers’ Charity, which helps young people develop knowledge, confidence, resilience, and skills to prepare them for life and work.
