The extraordinary story behind the world’s most valuable whisky up for sale next month: The Macallan Adami 1926

- 2023-11-04
Janet Harbinson, referred to as 'Nettie, was the managing director of The Macallan's 485-acre estate in 1926 and the woman behind the production of the 60-year-old collection that exists today.

A super-rare vintage bottle of whisky will go on sale next month for an estimated 1.2 million pounds. On November 18th, the Macallan Adami 1926 is to be auctioned by one of the world’s largest and most prestigious auction houses, Sotheby’s.

The Adami 1926 was bottled at 60 years old in 1986, making it one of the oldest Macallan whiskies in existence. At the time of bottling, only 40 bottles were ever produced and sold to some of Macallan’s top clients. Over the years, these bottles have made their way to auction houses and fetched considerable sums of money. In 2018 and 2019, auction records were broken three times by three different variations of the original 1986 bottling: Sir Peter Blake, Michael Dillon, Fine & Rare.

Based on previous auction results, expectations are running high for this year’s sale, which can be watched via live auction on the 18th of November 2023 at 3:00 pm GMT. But the story behind the 1926 release is even more extraordinary than the records being broken at auction.

Janet Harbinson, referred to as ‘Nettie’ by all those who knew her, was the managing director of The Macallan’s 485-acre estate in 1926 and the woman behind the production of the 60-year-old collection that exists today.

In 1918, tragedy struck when Nettie’s husband, Alexander, who ran the distillery, died unexpectedly. Despite her loss, Nettie remained faithful to the community and assumed control of the distillery and grounds, despite pressure to step back following her husband’s death. In doing so, Nettie secured the future of the Macallan brand and the Speyside community it resided in.

Nettie’s extraordinary story was brought to life in 2022 in a short film entitled “The Macallan Present The Spirit of 1926” .
