The North Wales distillery, Aber Falls, has recently received UK-protected status for their single malt Welsh whiskey. The UK Rural Affairs Minister, Lesley Griffiths, visited the distillery in Abergwyngregyn to congratulate the team on gaining the prestigious status. Rural Affairs Minister, Lesley Griffiths said: “It’s been great to visit Aber Falls and congratulate the team on seeing their Single Malt Welsh Whisky protected. Wales’ whisky sector has expanded quickly in recent years and is enjoyed by people around the world. The PGI status is a prestigious one and I am pleased Aber Falls’ product is receiving the recognition it deserves.” Carole Jones, General Manager of Aber Falls Distillery, said: “It has been a pleasure to welcome the Minister and share our progress as a business. The team has worked hard over the past few months, in order for us to gain PGI status.” PGI (Protected Geographical Status) in the UK was brought about in 2021 after Brexit. PGI status protects the misuse and forgery of the food and drink that is protected under the scheme. Penderyn, In the Welsh Wind, Da Mhile, and Coles are examples of other Welsh distilleries that have previously made it onto the PGI status list. Aber Falls is a North Wales distillery located a stone’s throw from Rhaeadr Fawr, the famous Aber Falls waterfall. Their whisky is crafted from Welsh ingredients from the surrounding area and they have a visitor centre that opened in May 2021, offering tours and gin lab experiences, as well as a café and retail area. The distillery in Abergwyngregyn began 24-hour production this year and they also have a bottling hall in Bangor, along with three maturation warehouses in the city. Back in May, Aber Falls released a limited-edition single malt called ‘Distiller’s Cut’. The whiskey was 3 years old and had an ABV of 47%. There were only 635 ever produced at the time and they were (or possibly still are) available in the distillery shop.
